Small wonders

In the town I live, there’s a road rimmed with a species of trees that bloom with small, yellow flowers.
I’ve always loved the smell.

One day, while walking that road, I heard a really faint, strange noise that made me stop. First I thought it was only in my head, something fleeting, but it continued. Didn’t find the source looking around on the ground – no one with a weird lawnmower.. It wasn’t a faraway helicopter or an airplane either. A sort of buzzing which made me think of all the cartoons where someone gets chased by a swarm of bees. Turned my eyes up to the treetops and there they were.
Hundreds and thousands of bees, bumblebees, all kinds of little ones collecting nectar and pollinating the flowers, simply minding their own business. Different species together doing the same thing.

The absolute surprise and joy of this, made me laugh out loud. It wasn’t only in one or a few, it was in every treetop, so the whole road was covered with a buzzing. Despite the multitude of insects you missed the whole wonder if you didn’t stop and listen for it, or look up and notice it.

This happened weeks ago but left a lasting mark in my mind. I believe that this world would be a happier, more wholesome place if we’d take note of spectacular things like this.
